1. Book/Story representation – artists aren’t always able to read the books they design a cover for so they must rely on the editor’s input or a cover art form to learn about the story.
2. Publisher Branding – Cover Artists must adhere to publisher guidelines for cover art.  For example, Cobblestone brands the Tryst and Wicked titles with the actual lettering on the cover.  When designing a Wicked or Tryst cover, our artists must consider the layout of images, lettering, and the brands of the line.
3. Marketing – Many forget that the cover is not just the show off piece for the author but the actual first line of visual marketing for the book, author, and publisher.  Experienced or trained artists know that one of the most important things in marketing is to know the readership of the publisher.  For example, menage books are a favorite at Cobblestone, therefore the author’s main idea for the visual marketing is to make sure three characters are included on the cover…so at first glance the reader knows it’s a menage romance.  Visual Marketing not only reflects the genre and sub-genre but also the feel of a book.  If the book is a paranormal that is taken into consideration, but if its a wolf shifter, the artist must design something that reflects that specific paranormal aspect of the story.
4. Time Management – This is important to an artist.  An artist is normally paid a flat amount per cover and not by how much time he or she spends designing the cover.  This is the reason Cobblestone Press has such an in depth cover art form.  The more information the artist has about a book, the quicker that artist can finish the design after its been assigned to them.
5. Artist Representation – With all of the considerations above, the artist must also stay true to their style.  It’s after all why they were contracted to begin with.  Artists are not the same.  Just as the author wants the reader to recognize their voice, artists want their style recognized.  This is how our favorite artists become so well known.

Our cover art forms ask for a lot of details about characters and story.  This is to provide the artists with everything they need when considering the layout of the cover.  But all details cannot be included in the design.  The artist look at all the details and choose which work best for layout, marketing, and everything else that has to be considered for the cover.  Their jobs are more than just photo shopping images together, it’s hours of going through resources for matching images or even more hours of painting the image, photo manipulation to make images match the story, and considering the above list of issues.

Like the editors, the artists are there to help an author’s book be the best it can be.  Some have years of experience in the industry, some have been trained by the publisher, some have education in art.  However they came to the industry, it’s a more beautiful place with them here.
